Building a Strong Foundation: Bone Grafting Before Implants

Illustration of the steps in bone grafting for dental implants If you’re considering dental implants to replace missing teeth, you may have heard about the importance of a strong jawbone to support them. At Hampton Dental Associates, Dr. Richard Winter and our team in Milwaukee, WI, often recommend bone grafting as a crucial step to ensure the success of your dental implants. This procedure provides the foundation for your new teeth, helping you achieve a long-lasting, confident smile.

When Is Bone Grafting Necessary?

Dental implants require a solid base of bone to anchor securely. Many patients already have stable and sturdy jaw bones, making them good candidates for traditional or even one-day dental implants. However, if you’ve had missing teeth or periodontal disease for some time, your jawbone may have deteriorated. The remaining bone may be too weak and thin to hold dental implants securely.

With bone grafting, Dr. Winter can restore and strengthen the jawbone, making it possible to place dental implants successfully.

The Bone Grafting Process

Bone grafting involves adding bone material to your jaw to increase density and volume. This material can come from your own body or a synthetic substitute.  Grafting material may come from donors, this bone is sterile and contains no living cells and acts like coral to promote new bone growth. The amount of bone needed can influence the choice of material. For instance, if you only need a small amount, Dr. Winter can use the bone shavings he collects during drilling to build up the jaw in the specific area where you need it.

If you need more bone, it can come from another area of your body during a separate procedure. Or, a synthetic bone substitute can be a good option. During the procedure, Dr. Winter places the graft material where the bone is deficient. Over time, your body replaces this new material with new bone, creating a stronger and more stable foundation for your implants.

Depending on the extent of the grafting needed, Dr. Winter may perform the procedure several months before you get your dental implants. This allows your jaw time to build a more stable foundation if you have very low jaw density.
