Let’s Address Common Root Canal Myths

At the center of your tooth is a collection of tissue, nerves, and vessels known as ‘pulp’. A bacterial infection of this part of the tooth requires either a root canal or extraction.  Root canal therapy is the removal of this infected pulp and the subsequent filling of the tooth.

Root canals have a variety of benefits from getting rid of the infection to returning the ability to chew properly. Unfortunately, even though 15 million root canals are performed every year, there are numerous myths that surround the safe procedure. Because these myths may prevent or delay someone who needs a root canal from getting them, let’s address them today.

Myth: Root Canals Are Painful

You won’t feel any pain during the procedure. Your provider will use local anesthesia to numb the area. Even after the procedure, though you can expect to feel some discomfort, pain is not anticipated. If you have a tooth ache, you may require antibiotics to decrease painful gasses and pressure in your tooth before performing a root canal procedure.

Myth: Root Canals Aren’t Necessary If There’s No Pain

While dental pain can influence your urgency in getting a root canal, pain may not always be present even while the pulp is infected. Your dentist can help determine if you need a root canal even in the absence of pain. Large abcesses can be a sign of infection that Dr. Winter can see on the x-ray or CBCT x-ray that if left untreated can silently spread to adjacent teeth or implants.

Remember, root canals are necessary. Without one you may face tooth loss or risk letting the infection spread to other areas in your mouth or even your body.

Myth: You Need Your Dental Pulp for Proper Tooth Function

Dental pulp, the part of your tooth that is removed during a root canal, is required during tooth development. Once the tooth is fully matured, pulp is not necessary for proper tooth function. The tooth can get all the nutrients it needs from surrounding tissues.
