If you’re missing a tooth and want a fast, long-lasting solution, one day dental implants can sound almost too good to be true. But, they’re not. Learn what actually happens during your appointment, so you can feel prepared and confident walking into the office and completing your smile.
At Hampton Dental Associates, your one-day dental implant appointment is led by Dr. Richard Winter, a highly credentialed implant dentist. With thousands of hours of advanced training and recognition as a Top Dentist in Milwaukee for over a decade, Dr. Winter provides patients with expertly planned, precise same-day implant treatments in a caring, patient-focused environment.
1. Consultation and Treatment Planning
Your visit begins with a thorough exam. The dentist will assess your medical history, discuss your goals, and take digital X-rays or scans of your jaw. These images help your dentist evaluate bone density, map the ideal implant position, and determine whether dental implants are right for you. You’ll also talk about sedation options, costs, and what to expect during recovery.
2. Preparing the Area
If a damaged tooth remains, it is gently removed. In many cases, Dr. Winter can place the implant immediately after the extraction. He will carefully clean and prepare the socket to minimize risks and ensure a stable foundation for your implant.
3. Placing the Dental Implant
Next, the titanium implant post is placed into your jawbone. This acts like a new artificial tooth root. Thanks to precise planning and modern technology, this step is usually quick and more comfortable than most patients expect. Sedation or local anesthesia helps ensure you feel relaxed and pain-free throughout the procedure.
4. Attaching the Temporary Tooth? In some instances we can place a temporary but it does increase risks that biting on the implant before it is integrated could cause it to become loose and fail.
Here’s where the “one day” part comes in. After the implant is secured, a custom-made temporary crown or bridge may immediately placed onto the post. This restoration is designed to look natural and allow you to smile and speak confidently while your implant heals beneath the surface. If the bone quality or quantity is in question, a healing cap is placed, the implant is covered to allow for undisturbed healing and the implant will be uncovered in 4 months to begin the restorative process. Immediate implants are not guaranteed and do come with unique risks the patient must accept. If a temporary crown on an implant is used to chew-rather than a very soft diet-the implant may fail to integrate and may require additional bone grafting before trying again. This will be assessed not only during the CBCT x-ray evaluation but also at the time of surgery. Poor implant insertion torque means no temporary on that day.
5. Post-Op Instructions and Follow-Up
Before you leave, you’ll receive detailed instructions on caring for your implant, what you can eat, and how to manage any mild discomfort. You will schedule a follow-up visit so Dr. Winter can check healing and, later, place your final, permanent crown.
