Signs Your Bone Graft Is Healing Well (and Signs to Call Your Dentist)

Older woman smiling after bone grafting in Milwaukee, WI Bone grafting is a common step in preparing for dental implants or preserving your jawbone after an extraction. After the procedure, it’s normal to feel a little unsure about what “good healing” looks like. Here are reassuring signs your bone graft is healing well, plus symptoms that should prompt a call to your dentist.

At Hampton Dental Associates, our team combines traditional values with progressive dentistry to carefully plan and monitor procedures. Serving Milwaukee families for four generations, we pride ourselves on compassionate, expert care.

Signs Your Bone Graft is Healing Well

Mild swelling that improves after 48-72 hours. Some puffiness is expected early on, especially during the first two to three days. A steady decrease is a good sign.

Manageable soreness. Tenderness is normal and should gradually ease each day. Many patients do well with prescribed medication or over-the-counter pain relievers, as directed.

Light bleeding or oozing that stops quickly. Minor bleeding the day of surgery is common. It should slow down and stop with gentle pressure and proper aftercare.

A stable graft site. The area should feel protected and undisturbed. If you have sutures, they may loosen slightly as healing progresses, but the site should not feel “open” or worsening.

Normal healing changes in your mouth. A white or yellowish film over the graft area can be part of the healing process. You may also notice mild bruising on the cheek or gums that fades within a week.

Improving function. You should be able to chew soft foods more comfortably as days pass, with less sensitivity and less swelling.
